The UK authorities has added an additional eleven more destinations to its travel advisory register about the risks of methanol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

This revised advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, following a number of high-profile incidents such as the tragic death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that even minimal doses of methanol can cause blindness or death within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol often employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

But in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.

Government Guidance for Travelers

Foreign Office official a senior official said that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"When you are drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the official warned.

"If something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – get medical help fast."

The full roster of nations identified as presenting a danger of methanol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
