A team of image specialists based in the island nation have successfully captured photographs of “red sprites”, one of the most elusive light phenomena on Earth, during which glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The photographers initially planned to photograph the Milky Way over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on a night in October, before encountering the rare phenomenon.

Initially believing they would be blessed to get good weather that night, but their expedition transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” a team member remarked.

While reviewing his images for a Milky Way panorama and found he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he said. “We just could not believe it – we experienced excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the night.”

Understanding Red Sprites

The scarlet phenomena are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, caused by storm systems. Unlike lightning that shoots towards the surface, red sprites shoot upwards towards the mesospheric region, producing shapes that are similar to columns, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The earliest recorded picture of a red sprite was captured – accidentally – in that year, by a research unit at the University of Minnesota.

Momentary and Dreamlike Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but one photographer was fortunate. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at an occurrence when it happened – just a perfect coincidence viewing the appropriate section of the sky and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.

Seeing the occurrences was a goal for the artist, an award-winning dark sky artist. “It appears as if you witness something that is not real, it’s very ethereal … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it is fascinating to witness.”

Skill-Based and Creative Mastery

Recording a red sprite demands a proficiency with technical photography, as well as an understanding of atmospheric physics and artistic vision, the individual explained. “It is a deeply engaging category of art that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

Another photographer commented it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I witnessed the starry river glowing above the distant edge while these massive crimson strands of energy danced above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he described.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no other images depicting red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in the same photograph.

“This was a singular occasion when you realize you are seeing something you’ll probably never see again.”
